When my son was 2 yrs old, I went to our pediatrician for our 2 yr check up. She was concerned about Kevin's lack of speech. He did not say any words but I optimistically said that his sister was slow in the beginning so I wasn't concerned.
Six months later, nothing had changed. Kevin wasn't speaking any words. He used to cry or make a hacking sound from his mouth. But otherwise, there were no productive sounds in terms of speech. I called up the pediatrician, who got us a referral to a speech therapist. This started our journey into learning about Speech Delays, Sensory Issues, and finally, a diagnosis of Autism.
My blog is called Kevin's Bab because for a while, Kevin's words for Mom or Mama was "Bab". It wasn't like the word "babe" but more of "babble". Then at times, it sounded like "Bob". But at the time, I was ecstatic that he was at least trying to say a word for Mom.
For a while, I used to joke that I was going to change my name to "egg" because it was one of the few words that Kevin could say clearly. Like any special needs parent, I was grateful for any progress. Then one day, Kevin was able to say "Mom" in therapy but it would take weeks before he would say "Mom" or "Mama" to me.
Kevin is almost 5 yrs old. When he was younger, I don't think I could have blogged about what was going on. I think it would have been too depressing because at the time, things were so slow and frustrating. Also, there was also a sense of denial along with hope that goes hand in hand when it comes to your own child.
I have never written a blog before so I guess we'll see how this goes...
Kevin's "MOM"
